There are a few things needed to do time lapse.
    1)A tripod.
2)A camera that can do single frames at a time.
3)Time. j/k (but for real, having some spare time helps)

things that help the process are:
    A camera with:
    An interval timer, or variometer.
    or Remote and remote socket
    or cable release.

Oh yeah, and if you don't have a timer on your camera, a watch is a good idea.

Then all you have to do is set up your shot, and if you have a timer, it does its thing, otherwise you get to look down at your watch and click frames away.
The result is pretty cool, and if you have an interesting subject(s) then it's well worth the time.

Does that mostly sum it up? If not, I'm sure that others would be glad to fill in the rest.
    Happy shooting.

Yeah that sums it up great! Thank you! I was thinking about the single frame thing and that made it clear.
